REBUILT, NOT COVERED UP

Denim darning rebuilds holes, tears, and thinning areas with layers of carefully placed thread.

Rather than hiding the garment’s history, the repair works with the denim’s existing weave, fades, and wear. The result is strong, flexible, and designed to age naturally with the garment.

Every repair is done by eye and by hand. We adjust the stitch direction, density, and thread tone as we work, so the repaired area becomes part of the denim instead of looking like something added on top.

amR Darning Service

Darning is one of the oldest forms of clothing repair, and still one of the most skilled. A patch covers the damage. Darning rebuilds it. Cotton thread is worked back and forth across the worn area to recreate the original structure of the fabric. When it’s done well, the repair blends in, softens with wear, and can end up stronger than the fabric around it.

We use a vintage Consew 207, a Japanese-made industrial machine built for this kind of work. Its single-needle lockstitch and narrow cylinder arm let us move the fabric freely in any direction, making it ideal for denim, canvas, workwear, and other hard-wearing garments.

If you’d rather repair what you already own than replace it, bring us your favorite jeans, work jacket, or an old piece that means something to you. We’ll help give it more life.

common questions

View all questions

What denim repairs do you offer?

We offer denim repair and denim darning for holes, tears, thinning fabric, crotch wear, worn pockets, hems and other damaged areas.

Each repair is assessed individually so we can reinforce the fabric while keeping as much of the original fade, wear and character as possible.

Can you repair large holes, tears or badly worn denim?

In many cases, yes. Large holes, tears and heavily worn areas can often be rebuilt with careful denim darning rather than simply covered with a patch. Using our vintage Consew cylinder arm machine, we control the stitch direction and density as we work, rebuilding the damaged fabric while keeping the repair strong, flexible and in tune with the original fades and wear.

We also reinforce the surrounding fabric where needed, helping prevent the damage from spreading and giving the garment more life without losing the character that made it worth repairing in the first place.

Send us a few clear photos and we can assess the damage, explain the best repair option and let you know what we recommend.

What is denim darning?

Denim darning is a specialised repair technique used to rebuild holes, tears and thinning areas with carefully placed stitching.

Rather than covering the damage with a patch, the repair works with the denim’s existing weave, fades and wear. Stitch direction, density and thread tone are adjusted by eye as the repair is built, helping the new stitching blend naturally into the garment.

The result is a strong, flexible denim repair that preserves the character of the jeans and is made to keep ageing with them.

Will the denim repair be invisible?

Not always, and that is not necessarily the goal. We carefully match the thread to the denim and work with the original weave, fades and wear so the repair blends in as naturally as possible. Using our vintage Consew cylinder arm machine gives us the control to rebuild damaged areas with precise darning, even around seams, pockets and other difficult parts of the garment.

Some repairs become very subtle. Others stay more visible depending on the fabric, colour and amount of damage. If an area is too damaged to disappear completely, we can also look at creative options such as chainstitch embroidery to turn the repair into part of the design.

The goal is to make the garment strong and wearable again while keeping the character that made you want to save it in the first place.

Can you repair vintage or heavily faded denim?

Yes. Vintage and well worn denim can often be repaired while keeping the fades, wear and character that make the garment special. We carefully match thread tones to the existing denim, then adjust the stitch direction and density as we work. Our vintage Consew cylinder arm machine gives us precise control around seams, pockets and hard to reach areas, allowing us to rebuild weakened fabric without simply covering it up.

The goal is a strong, flexible repair that sits naturally within the denim and continues to age with the garment. Every piece is different, so we look closely at the fabric, the damage and the surrounding wear before deciding how to approach the repair.

How much does denim repair cost?

Our denim repairs start from $65, with the final price depending on the damage, the garment and the type of repair needed. Some pieces may need darning, while others are better suited to a more traditional repair or a creative chainstitch embroidery repair.

Send us a few clear photos of the garment and damaged area, and we can recommend the best approach and give you an initial estimate before you send anything in.

Once you approve the quote, mail us your denim and include a prepaid, self-addressed return mailer inside the package so we can send your repaired piece back to you.

When your denim arrives, we inspect it in person before starting the repair. That helps us confirm the best repair method, thread choice, and level of reinforcement while preserving the original fades, wear, and character of the piece.
